What if the same app that CAKE riders use for bike connectivity could also help them schedule maintenance? Could new customers use that same platform to pick out the right bike for their needs?
We worked with CAKE to set a vision for a product that would assist their users at all touchpoints along their journey.

CAKE was founded on a strong design philosophy. Our designers worked closely with their team to make sure their unique visual style communicated on mobile.
Setting new standards in connectivity
With GSM and Bluetooth connectivity, the CAKE app gives its users full control over their bike’s onboard IoT modules. The result is a feature-rich interface that manages everything from locking/unlocking to theft prevention to historical ride data.
Cross-platform architecture
We pitched Flutter as the right architecture for CAKE’s project. Running on its own graphics engine, Flutter’s platform-independence and scalability kept our development cycle rapid and stable.

CAKE is a fast-moving scale-up with clear-cut design guidelines, so our development called for flexibility and precision. We emphasized a design-first process, resulting in a fluid development cycle with frequent stakeholder involvement, open to change but not weighed down by it.

DISCOVERY
GOAL DEFINITION
We worked with CAKE to determine the project’s goals, and set ourselves up to accomplish those goals by laying out the foundation for our shared work processes.
RESEARCH
We performed a deep dive into CAKE - its history, competitors, and branding - to better inform the project’s future.
IDEATION
We created user stories to represent desired app functionality, and carved out lo-fi wireframes for a preview of the app’s visual flow.
DEVELOPMENT GROUND WORK
While our back-end developers laid in infrastructure updates, our front-end developers prepared to migrate the existing iOS app to a platform-agnostic Flutter framework.
IMPLEMENTATION
AGILE DESIGN
Following CAKE’s brand guidelines, our designers converted their lo-fi wireframes into the more polished screens that would display on launch. We also optimized our design work files for development, allowing both designers and developers to navigate the same files.

Our developers brought our hi-fi wireframes to life.
CLIENT REVIEW
Throughout the process, we kept up a regular cadence of updates and feedback with CAKE - daily standups with a weekly stakeholder review.
POST-LAUNCH
UI UPDATES
We increased app usability with new components and UI refreshes based on internal review.
BUG FIXES
With an influx of new users testing the product, our developers fought off minor hiccups in app functionality.
NEW FEATURE DEVELOPMENT
We added continued support after launch with the introduction of new features, including self-service flows and support for new bike models.
